Mikonik Technologies, Ltd. offer ApiBrassine, a novel compound, for bee feeding on basis of 24-epibrassinolide, natural pollen hormone. In its chemical structure epibrassinolide is close to insect hormones, i.g. ecdysteroids, that is responsible for reproductive function and stress adaptation. Both similar structure and natural evolutional contact of bees with epibrassinolide are viewed as telling arguments in favor of the offered compound efficiency in bee feeding.

Epibrassinolide is referred to brassinosteroids, a new class of phytosterols. Mikonik Technologies, Ltd. is involved in the design of new technologies and products with brassinosteroids for the application in agriculture (plant growth regulators) and medicine (cholesterol lowering drugs, etc.). The research results are covered by US Patent 6,998,397; US Patent Applications 20040253289 and WO2006/023073 A1. New phytosterols, identical with natural ones, are synthesized on the industrial scale by the authors. New products from brassinosteroids with the focus on the efficiency studies are also manufactured. ApiBrassine was developed proceeding from most important recent findings by scientists from the Timeryasev Agriculture Academy in Moscow, Russia.

ApiBrassine production by Mikonik Technologies, Ltd. followed the use of epibrassinolide in bee-farming practice in Russia that demonstrated its stimulating effect on queen bee reproductive performance, considerable bee family fostering, longer life expectancy, better resistance to stresses supported by numerous positive references from beekeepers.

ApiBrassine is a biologically active extra feed for bees, containing epibrassinolide. It is indicated for bee feeding, weight growth of male and female bees, increase in egg-laying qualities, longer life expectancy and higher family potential.

Mikonik Technologies, Ltd. is oriented to the development of new pharmaceuticals based on brassinosteroids, which are a new class of plant hormones. Until recently, the latter ones where known exclusively as powerful natural plant growth regulators promising for agricultural use, but nowadays more and more data on their possible medicinal use appear. 24-epibrassinolide (EBl) is among the first candidates of brassinosteroids to become a medicine.

24-EPIBRASSINOLIDE - NEW OXYPHYTOSTEROL FOR ATHEROSCLEROSIS PREVENTING AND TREATMENT

DEVELOPMENT STATUS: Early Stage

FULL DESCRIPTION
A new method for improving blood cholesterol and its conjugates levels in mammals, including humans, is based on the administration of EBl widely distributed in natural sources. Because of the very low natural content in plants, its isolation is economically unreasonable and that is why the substance is prepared synthetically in pure form (one stereo-isomer, more than 95% purity) structurally identical to the natural one.

This new approach is highly efficient for the lowering of elevated levels of cholesterol and lipids and for the improving some protective blood factors. In particular, it allows lowering after four-eight-week administration (0.03-20 mcg per kg) total cholesterol (18-44%), LDL (11-26%), VLDL (11-51%), triglycerides (51-68%) and increasing HDL (24-47%) under cholesterol-enriched and normal diet in animals and in a human. We found that EBl had an ability to protect in vitro (formazan assay, supravital cell staining by the trypan blue, indirect immunofluorescence) the living cells against HIV-1-cytopathic action. The obtained results showed that EBl decreased HIV-specific antigen production in the infected cells at a concentration of 5 -100 ng per ml.

It may be speculated that being normal constituent of plants and a food component, EBl is safe and non-toxic compound for a wide application in medicine and in prophylactic purposes. This assumption has got confirmations in our different toxicological studies. They showed low acute toxicity of EBl (LD50 in mice >4000 mg/kg; TLM48 for carp >10 ppm; LK50 for daphnia Moina macrocopa >100 ppm; Tetrahymena piriformis threshold concentration - 400 ppm) and confirmed no postponed negative effects in prolonged and chronic experiments. No evidence of carcinogenicity was observed (mice). No cytotoxicity.
