Brassinosteroids
Brassinosteroids are recently discovered class of plant hormones which are widespread in the plant kingdom, occur in plants in very small quantities, and regulate plant growth and development. Brassinosteroids are environmental friendly stimulators of plant growth and development, anti stress and quality improving agent. Many data indicate that brassinosteroids as plant growth regulators act at a more fundamental level of bio-signaling as a leading force for initiation of other plant hormones (like auxin, cytokinin, abscisic acid and ethylene). That is why, in general, their physiological effects are much wider (not so specialized as for classical phytohormones), are initiated by much smaller concentrations and have much deeper consequences that could be seen very often even in later plant generation.
The first brassinosteroid, brassinolide, was isolated from pollen of the rape plant (Brassica napus L.) in 1979 by American scientists. Later it was shown that brassinosteroids are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom. Over 60 kinds of brassinosteroids have been found to date, out of which brassinolide, 24-epibrassinolide and 28-homobrassinolide are the three most potent brassinosteroids. They show remarkable plant physiological activities. They induce cell elongation and cell division; increase DNA and RNA polymerase activity; interact synergistically with auxins; stimulate ethylene production; increase tolerance to stress due to temperature, water or salinity; act to protect against pesticides and increase crop yields in wheat, barley, corn, lettuce, potato, soybean, bean, melon, grapes, grapefruit, orange, sugar beet, apple, and spinach. New observations are being recorded at an ever increasing rate.
